A Wyckoff New Jersey man was arrested after allegedly stealing items from a local grocery store.

According to law enforcement, a 50-year-old man entered a Stop & Shop store in Wyckoff NJ and attempted to steal several items.

Store employees reportedly observed the suspect concealing the items in a shopping cart and then attempting to exit the building without paying for them.

After the suspect tried to leave the store, workers detained him and contacted the Wyckoff Police Department for assistance.

Wyckoff NJ police officers spoke with the suspect and determined that he had, in fact, attempted to walk out of the store without properly paying for items concealed in his shopping cart.

The total retail value of the items that were allegedly taken is said to be approximately $372.

Since the retail value of the items is greater than $200 but less than $500, the suspect, who resides in Wyckoff, NJ, will like face fourth degree felony charges in the case.

If the suspect is ultimately convicted on shoplifting charges, he faces severe criminal penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:20-11, a person who shoplifts items valued at between $200 and $500 can be charged with a fourth degree felony. A conviction on fourth degree shoplifting charges could result in a sentence of up to 18 months in NJ State Prison.

Meanwhile, the suspect is free after being released on his own recognizance. He will have to make an appearance in Bergen County Superior Court, located in Hackensack NJ, at a later date to answer the theft charges against him.
