Here is a review from one of our many satisfied DWI clients: “Saved me from a DUI. HIGHLY recommended”
Posted by Dave
“I highly recommend Travis and his law firm. A year ago I got into an accident, blood drawn, DUI. I knew I was facing life changing charges. Travis was able to get me off with no charges! When the judge reached a verdict, he mentioned the “good work of my attorney” that prevented them from proceeding with my prosecution. It is safe to say Travis saved my life and if your in a tough spot I highly recommend Travis to be your attorney.”
Since East Rutherford DWI offenses come with stiff penalties, you want to be sure you have the best representation to help you challenge the breath test results, how the field sobriety test was conducted, as well as any other improper arrest and police procedures.
As a DWI attorney, I understand the specific defenses that work in this type of case. Here’s what I can promise you about myself and the representation that you will receive if you hire The Tormey Law Firm:
- I have a series of advanced defense tactics that I use in DWI cases, like “Challenging the Field Sobriety Tests“, “Challenging The Initial Stop“, or “Challenging the 20 Minute Observation Period“. I’ve use these strategies in thousands of DWI cases that I’ve handled.
- I am one of few NJ DWI Attorneys that is certified to operate and therefore challenge the breath testing device that the police use in DWI charges. There are very few attorneys that can say the same thing. This allows me to “Fight The Alcotest Reading“.
- My tactics and strategies in the courtroom have allowed me to build relationships with the prosecutors that you are facing. If they know that their case can be dismantled, they are far more likely to negotiate instead of going to trial.
- I enjoy fighting DWI cases in court, and I am passionate about winning.
- I am going to help you get through this. I will answer all of your questions, I will let you know exactly where and when you need to be in court, and I will be available any time you need me.
If you want to feel better about your case, watch the videos that explain how I beat DWI charges. It’s a great way for me to show you exactly what I do to attack DWI charges. I prefer to let my methods and my results in court speak for themselves.
Please also don’t hesitate to pick up the phone and call me. I am available for free DWI consultations and I’m more than happy give you my suggestions on your case.

Charged with DWI in East Rutherford, New Jersey
Nestled in the valley between two rivers, the Passaic and the Hackensack, this quaint 4.5 square mile Bergen County borough called East Rutherford packs a lot of play on a little bit of land. Want to see the Jets play the Giants? Catch the game at the MetLife stadium. Not into football? Check out New Meadowlands Market or the American Dream mall for some great deals on shopping and eating, making sure to take the kids into Nickelodeon Universe while at the mall. So much to do in such a small space, but if you plan to enjoy a beer or two during the game or at the mall’s dining establishments, you had best not drive afterward. East Rutherford, like the rest of the state, is serious about keeping drunk drivers off the road.
If you are stopped in East Rutherford and suspected of DWI, you may be asked to perform field sobriety tests, consisting of several types of tests. An officer may ask you to follow his finger with your eyes, which is the horizontal gaze nystagmus test. Eye jerking or inability to follow suggests impairment. You may also be asked to walk one foot in front of the other in a line, the walk and turn test, and stand with one leg raised for 30 seconds, the one-leg stand test. Performing poorly means you are likely to be arrested and take the breathalyzer test next, which requires you to breathe into a device that registers your blood alcohol concentration (BAC). If your BAC is .08% or over, chances are you will be charged with a DUI. If this happens to you, you will be required to appear in East Rutherford Municipal Court, where you will be prosecuted.

What Happens if Convicted of DUI in East Rutherford?
Getting a DWI, even for the first time, is serious business in New Jersey. The law requires that anyone caught driving under the influence of alcohol must install an ignition interlock device, which acts like a breathalyzer and prevents a car from starting if a driver has a BAC reading of 0.05% or higher. If they blow a 0.08% to 0.10% BAC, they keep the device in their car for 3 months, and 7 to 12 months for registering 0.10% to 0.15%. However, a first- time offender’s license is not generally suspended if their BAC is between 0.8 and 0.15, only until they install the interlock device. If they blow over 0.15, they lose their license for 4 to 6 months and must drive with the interlock device for 9 to 15 months after that.
Tougher still, a second DUI offense means your driver’s license is suspended for 1 to 2 years, and you must drive with an ignition interlock for 2 to 4 years. Three or more DUI or DWI offenses result in an 8 year period of license suspension and an interlock device for 2 to 4 years. Refusing to take a breath test is also an offense with specific penalties. If you are convicted for refusing to submit to a breath test, your license is suspended until you install an ignition interlock device, which you must drive with for 9 to 15 months (this is for a first refusal, after which the penalties get worse). And a person convicted of driving under the influence of drugs (narcotics, hallucinogens, and addictive drugs) loses their license for 7 to 12 months but does not have to install an interlock device. Otherwise, the penalties are the same as those for driving under the influence of alcohol convictions.
However, license suspension and driving with an interlock device are not the only penalties for a DWI in East Rutherford. If convicted for your first offense, you pay between $250.00 and $500.00 in fines, and pay higher insurance premiums, along with a three-year $1,000.00 annual surcharge. You also spend 48 hours in a two-day Intoxicated Driver Resource Center and up to 30 days in jail. For a second offense, the fine increases to $1,000.00 and the jail term extends to a potential 90 days plus 30 days of community service. A third offense enlarges the incarceration period to potentially six months and the insurance surcharge to $1,500.00 per year for three years. And these fines do not even include the fees you pay for installing and maintaining the interlock device, which is costly. What’s more, a conviction in East Rutherford Municipal Court results in a DWI on your driving record with the Division of Motor Vehicles.
