Northvale New Jersey Couple Faces Prison Time for Embezzlement
A Northvale New Jersey couple recently pleaded guilty to federal charges of embezzlement.
According to federal prosecutors, the two suspects embezzled thousands of dollars while defrauding a health care benefit program.
The suspects ran the United International Brotherhood of All Trades, Technologies, Service, Administration and Medical Workers Union. While in charge of the union, the suspects sponsored a fund that gave health coverage to union members who registered on the Internet.
Over the course of roughly three years, from 2009 to 2011, the suspects allegedly embezzled $160K from the fund.
Prosecutors said that the suspects used the stolen money to finance their mortgages and pay for expensive cruises and other vacations.
The suspects recently appeared in U.S. District Court in Newark NJ and entered guilty pleas to federal embezzlement charges.
The suspects will have to return to federal court in Newark on February 8 so that they can be officially sentenced.
