Police got involved in a standoff with Carlstadt NJ man who allegedly murdered his wife on the front lawn of the couple’s home. The tense standoff ended when the suspect reportedly committed suicide.
According to law enforcement, the 45-year-old suspect used a handgun to shoot and kill his wife outside their shared residence at 505 Union Street in Carlstadt, New Jersey.
Afterwards, the Carlstadt Police Department dispatched officers to the scene.
The suspect barricaded himself inside the house while members of a Bergen Regional SWAT Team attempted to negotiate a peaceful outcome.
During the violent incident, the suspect gave Carlstadt police officers permission to go to the front lawn of the house and retrieve the victim’s body.
Meanwhile, police officers were also able to usher out the couple’s three kids. Carlstadt cops reportedly helped to get the three children outside the house, with the kids eventually reaching a safe zone by hopping over a fence in the backyard.
After several hours of talking to police, the suspect reportedly turned his gun on himself and took his own life.
It is possible that the suspect committed suicide just before law enforcement made their way into the house. According to neighbors, there were loud sounds of flashbang grenades being used by Carlstadt police just before the standoff came to an end.
The tragic outcome to the domestic violence incident has put local residents on alert. At this time, authorities have not indicated what might have precipitated the domestic dispute or whether the victim had previously filed for a restraining order against the suspect.
