Paterson Man Accused of Assaulting Police Officers at Ramsey Police Station
Aggravated Assault on Police Officers in Ramsey NJ
Ramsey New Jersey police arrested a Paterson NJ man who allegedly attacked police officers.
The Ramsey Police Department received an emergency call about an attack at Classic Auto Spa on Route 17 in Ramsey, NJ. The incident reportedly occurred during the morning.
The 28-year-old suspect allegedly used a pair of pliers to assault someone at the car wash. According to witnesses, he then left the scene on foot.
Sometime later, Upper Saddle River police officers saw the suspect standing in a parking lot on Mountainside Avenue in Mahwah, NJ. The officers spoke with the suspect, who reportedly refused to answer their questions.
The officers eventually determined that the suspect was the person accused of committing the assault at the Ramsey NJ car wash. The officers then arrested the suspect and took him to Ramsey Police Department headquarters.
Once the suspect got to the police station, he allegedly attacked two police officers as they moved him to a cell block. The alleged assault resulted in injuries to both officers.
Police quickly subdued the suspect, who reportedly sustained injuries as well. Police took the suspect to Bergen Regional Medical Center in Paramus so that he could receive medical treatment for his injuries.
The suspect was charged with three counts of aggravated assault on police officers, as well as another count of aggravated assault and one count of obstructing administration of governmental function.
Based on the article, it sounds like the defendant could be facing 2nd degree aggravated assault with a weapon charges based on the initial altercation at the car wash. Since he used a pair of pliers as a weapon, this is a 2nd degree assault charge punishable by 5-10 years in prison if convicted. Also, because it is a violent crime, the defendant must serve 85% of his prison sentence before becoming eligible for parole. Also, simple assault on a police officer becomes an aggravated assault charge because the victim is a police officer.
After being treated at the hospital for his injuries, the suspect was transferred to the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack, New Jersey. He was being held at the jail in lieu of $50,000 bail.
