Lodi NJ Man Allegedly Wielded Swords During Dispute, Charged with Aggravated Assault
Aggravated Assault with Weapon Lodi NJ
Police in Lodi New Jersey arrested a man who allegedly wielded ninja-style swords during a serious domestic dispute.
According to officials, the 22-year-old suspect got into a verbal altercation with family members at a residence in Lodi, NJ. When the verbal dispute turned physical, the suspect allegedly grabbed two 24-inch swords.
Witnesses later told police that the suspect began to wildly swing the swords.
Thankfully, the suspect’s family members were able to grab the swords away from the suspect.
Someone called the Lodi Police Department, which dispatched police officers to the scene. When police arrived at the residence, they subdued the suspect and placed him under arrest.
The suspect was charged with multiple crimes, including aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
If the suspect is convicted on the most serious aggravated assault charges, he faces severe penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b), aggravated assault with a deadly weapon such as a knife, sword, or gun can be classified as a second or third degree felony. A conviction for third degree aggravated assault could lead to a sentence of 3-5 years in New Jersey State Prison. A second degree offense, on the other hand, is punishable by 5-10 years in state prison.
Also, because it is a violent offense, the defendant would be subject to the No Early Release Act. This means that he must serve 85% of any prison sentence imposed before becoming eligible for parole.
The suspect was able to secure his release from police custody after posting $20,000 bail. He will have to appear in Bergen County Superior Court in Hackensack NJ to answer the charges against him.
