Senior Citizen Accused of Selling Handguns to Undercover Cop in East Rutherford, NJ
East Rutherford NJ police recently arrested a man accused of attempting to illegally sell handguns and ammunition to undercover officers.
The suspect is a 77-year-old man from Bayonne, New Jersey. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office recently issued a statement indicating that the suspect arranged to meet with an undercover detective and agreed to sell the cop multiple firearms, as well as bullets.
The suspect “offered three handguns with ammunition for sale” while meeting with the undercover officer, according to Bergen County prosecutors.
After the suspect allegedly committed the weapons offense, East Rutherford cops moved in and placed him under arrest. While arresting the suspect, police reportedly seized three handguns and an unspecified amount of ammunition.
East Rutherford police officers later searched the suspect’s residence in Bayonne NJ and reportedly discovered a loaded handgun. Police also seized approximately $100,000 in cash from the suspect’s home.
The suspect faces serious criminal charges for illegal distribution of a firearm without being registered or licensed.
Law enforcement is still actively investigating the case. As a result, additional criminal charges could be forthcoming in the case.
After being placed under arrest and processed, the suspect was released from police custody on his own recognizance. The suspect will have to make an appearance in Bergen County Superior Court at a later date to address the charges against him.
