NY Man Charged with Arson in Connection with Mahwah NJ Fire
A New York man was recently arrested for allegedly starting a fire which destroyed a home in the process of being built in Mahwah, New Jersey.
According to the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, a 19-year-old man from Pomona NY deliberately set fire to a home being built on Lakeview Drive in Mahwah. The incident reportedly occurred on November 19.
Authorities indicated that the blaze quickly consumed the structure. According to police, the house was engulfed in flames by the time firefighters arrived at the scene. Authorities later revealed that the structure was completely destroyed by the fire.
When the fire finally settled, Mahwah police and Mahwah fire officials alerted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office arson squad. An investigation followed, with investigators ultimately determining that the fire had been set intentionally.
The suspect was then arrested and charged with aggravated arson. He faces additional charges for burglary and failure to report and control a fire.
After being placed under arrest, the suspect was transported to the Bergen County Jail. He is being held at the facility in lieu of a $100,000 bail amount; there is no 10 percent option.
