NY Man Accused of Shoplifting at Gas Station in Mahwah, New Jersey
Shoplifting Charges in Mahwah NJ
Mahwah New Jersey police arrested a New York man accused of shoplifting at a local gas station.
According to officials, the 21-year-old suspect entered the Gulf gas station located on Route 17 in Mahwah NJ and stole small items by sneaking them into his pockets.
Additionally, the suspect allegedly tried to pay for a bottle of water by using a $100 bill. When the store clerk questioned the suspect about the stolen items in his pockets, the suspect allegedly shoved the clerk and punched him.
Mahwah police responded to the scene a short time later and found the suspect.
Police officers later searched the suspect and allegedly discovered 124 wax folds of heroin. Police also reportedly found the suspect in possession of a hypodermic needle.
The suspect was arrested and charged with a number of crimes, including robbery, shoplifting, theft of movable property, possession of heroin, possession with intent to distribute heroin, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
After being placed under arrest and processed, the suspect was taken to the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack, NJ. He was being held at the jail in lieu of $120,000 bail.
Shoplifting or theft becomes a robbery charge when the defendant uses force in the crime. Obviously, at that point, the charges become a lot more serious as the defendant is facing felony charges and substantial prison time.
