Fort Lee NJ Man Accused of Hitting Senior in Wheelchair on Leonia Road, Leaving Scene of Accident
Police in Leonia NJ recently arrested a Fort Lee man who allegedly crashed his SUV into an elderly man in a wheelchair.
According to authorities, the suspect struck the victim as the victim was attempting to cross the road at the intersection of Leonia Avenue and Fort Lee Road in Leonia, New Jersey. The suspect was reportedly behind the wheel of the SUV and traveling east on Fort Lee Road at the time of the auto accident.
The vehicle’s contact with the victim resulted in the victim being thrown approximately 20 feet and crashing hard to the pavement.
Afterwards, the suspect reportedly left the scene of the accident without checking on the victim or dialing 911.
The victim, a 78-year-old man from Fort Lee NJ, sustained significant injuries in the car crash, including multiple broken bones.
Detectives with the Leonia Police Department investigated the motor vehicle accident and obtained video footage that reportedly showed the suspect driving a maroon-colored 2016 Buick Encore with front-end damage. Leonia NJ cops later arrested the 53-year-old suspect and took him to Leonia police headquarters.
According to law enforcement, the suspect admitted to causing the accident and then leaving the scene of the car crash.
The suspect has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident resulting in serious bodily injury. He has also been cited for numerous traffic violations, including reckless driving and failure to stop for a pedestrian.
