Florida Man Accused of Sexually Assaulting 11-Year-Old Girl in Ridgewood, NJ
Police recently arrested a Florida man who allegedly committed a sexual assault of a young girl in Ridgewood, New Jersey.
According to Bergen County prosecutors, the suspect sexually assaulted the victim on at least one occasion in Ridgewood, NJ.
Bergen County authorities learned about the alleged sexual offense when the victim’s mother notified law enforcement in Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania State Police then contacted the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office to inform them that a young girl had come forward with allegations of being sexually assaulted in Ridgewood, NJ.
Detectives with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Special Victim’s Unit then conducted an investigation and interviewed the victim. During interviews, the victim reportedly provided detailed descriptions of the sexual acts allegedly committed by the suspect.
The victim was reportedly just 11 years old at the time of the sex crimes. The suspect was reportedly an acquaintance of the victim’s mom.
The suspect, a 36-year-old man from Orlando, Florida, faces serious criminal charges for aggravated sexual assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
If the suspect is convicted on the most serious charges of aggravated sexual assault, he faces significant penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2, a person who commits an act of sexual penetration with a minor who is less than 13 years old can be charged with a first degree felony. A conviction for first degree aggravated sexual assault could result in a sentence of 10-20 years in New Jersey State Prison.
Since the suspect was placed under arrest in Florida, he will need to be extradited back to Bergen County NJ in order to stand trial for the criminal charges.
