Ridgefield Park Police Investigate Alleged Assault, Hate Crime Committed Against 14-Year-Old
Aggravated Assault Charges in Ridgefield Park NJ
Police in Ridgefield Park NJ are investigating the alleged assault of a 14-year-old child.
According to law enforcement, four suspects attacked the victim as he walked alone in a residential area in Ridgefield Park, New Jersey. The attack occurred shortly after school ended for the day at 3:00 p.m.
The victim later told Ridgefield Park police officers that he was “physically assaulted.” The suspects did not use any weapons during the attack.
After committing the attack, the offenders ran away and fled the scene on foot.
The victim sustained minor injuries in the assault. Thankfully, he did not require hospitalization.
The victim provided police with descriptions of his attackers. The suspects have been described as boys around the ages of 14 or 15. One of the suspects wore a red t-shirt with white-colored polka dots, while another suspect wore a blue polo shirt.
At this time, investigators are treating the attack as a possible hate crime and bias incident. In a statement, police said that detectives made the determination that the incident was a bias attack and that it may have had something to do with “the victim’s perceived sexual preference.”
If investigators are able to identify and locate the suspects, it is likely that serious criminal charges for aggravated assault would follow. Depending on whether the offenders are charged as juveniles or adults, they could face up to 10 years in NJ State Prison on second degree aggravated assault charges.
In addition, if this is classified as a hate crime, the defendant’s would be facing additional charges which would enhance the possible penalties and prison time they would be facing.
