Lodi New Jersey Man Allegedly Had Machete, Threatened Neighbor
Aggravated Assault with Weapon Charge in Lodi NJ
Police arrested a Lodi NJ man who allegedly brandished a machete and threatened his neighbor.
According to law enforcement, the 48-year-old suspect got into a verbal altercation with one of his neighbors. The dispute reportedly stemmed from an argument about a car that had been parked in the suspect’s driveway on Aida Court in Lodi, New Jersey.
At some point, the altercation became physical and the suspect allegedly grabbed a machete.
According to the victim, the suspect began “swinging the machete” and “striking it against the house.” The victim said that the suspect may have been “looking to fight.”
The Lodi Police Department received a call about the potentially violent incident and immediately dispatched officers to the scene. When police officers arrived at the residence, they subdued the suspect and placed him under arrest.
Thankfully, no one was injured during the incident.
The suspect has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
If the suspect is ultimately convicted on the aggravated assault charges, he could be subject to severe criminal penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1(b), anyone who attempts to cause serious bodily injury while using a deadly weapon such as a handgun, knife, or machete can be charged with a second degree felony. A conviction for second degree aggravated assault could lead to a sentence of 5-10 years in NJ State Prison.
In addition, because this is a violent crime, the defendant is subject to sentencing under the No Early Release Act. This means that he must serve 85% of his prison sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
After being placed under arrest and processed, the suspect was taken to the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack, New Jersey. He was being held at the correctional facility on a $70,000 bail amount.
