Garfield NJ Resident Charged with Aggravated Assault, Accused of Using Knife, Brick to Threaten Man
Terroristic Threats, Aggravated Assault Charges in Garfield NJ
Garfield New Jersey police arrested a local man who allegedly used a brick and a knife to threaten another individual on a city street.
According to authorities, the 18-year-old Garfield NJ man got into a verbal dispute with the 28-year-old victim while the two of them stood near the intersection of Palisade Avenue and Monroe Street in Garfield, NJ.
The suspect was said to be upset because the victim had been walking with a female acquaintance. The victim later told investigators that the suspect walked up to him and threatened him with weapons that included a brick and a knife.
The victim and his female acquaintance were able to find a Garfield police officer who was on foot patrol nearby. The officer then located the suspect just a few blocks away from the alleged encounter with the victim.
The police officer investigated the victim’s allegations and then arrested the suspect.
The suspect was charged with several criminal offenses, including aggravated assault, terroristic threats, and unlawful possession of a weapon.
If the suspect is ultimately convicted on the terroristic threats charges, he would be subject to severe penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-3, a threat to kill or harm another person is classified as a third degree criminal offense. A conviction on third degree terroristic threats charges could result in a sentence of 3-5 years in New Jersey State Prison.
In addition, the defendant is facing aggravated assault charges which can be graded as a second degree, third degree, or fourth degree felony depending on the nature and circumstances of the alleged assault. Because this is a violent crime, if the defendant is convicted he must serve 85% of his prison sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
After the suspect was placed under arrest and processed, he was taken to the Bergen County Jail in Hackensack, NJ. He was being held at the correctional facility on a $25,000 bail amount.
