Aggravated Assault Charges Emerson NJ
Police recently arrested an Emerson NJ man who allegedly assaulted a young girl.
According to Bergen County prosecutors, the 39-year-old suspect attacked the 9-year-old victim and caused “a significant injury.”
The Emerson Police Department learned about the allegations of assault, prompting police to notify the New Jersey Division of Child Protection and Permanency. The agency then got in touch with the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office, which started a formal investigation into the suspect.
Investigators spoke with the victim and learned that she was reportedly an acquaintance of the suspect. At some point, police obtained enough evidence to arrest the suspect.
The suspect, who lives in Emerson, was arrested and charged with multiple crimes, including aggravated assault and child endangerment.
If the suspect is eventually convicted on the most serious charges of aggravated assault, he would be subject to significant penalties. As set forth by N.J.S.A. 2C:12-1, an assault that results in serious bodily injury can be classified as a second degree felony. A conviction for second degree aggravated assault could lead to a sentence of 5-10 years in New Jersey State Prison.
Also, aggravated assault is classified as a violent crime under the No Early Release Act which means that the defendant must serve 85% of any prison sentence imposed before becoming eligible for parole.
After being placed under arrest and charged, the suspect was remanded to the Bergen County Jail on a $50K bail amount. There is no 10-percent cash option for posting bail.
The suspect will have to make an appearance in Bergen County Superior Court, located in Hackensack NJ, in order to address the charges against him.
