Belleville NJ Cops Arrested, Charged with Simple Assault for Bar Fight
Four Belleville NJ police officers were among the five men placed under arrest and charged with simple assault after allegedly getting into a bar fight while off duty.
The violent incident allegedly occurred at a local bar a couple of weeks ago. According to law enforcement officials, the suspects got into a physical altercation with multiple bar patrons. The fight allegedly continued even after the suspects were escorted out of the building by security.
Someone dialed 911 and alerted local police, which dispatched cops to the scene to break up the fight.
At least one person reportedly sustained minor injuries as a result of the bar fight and required medical treatment at Hackensack University Medical Center.
Once Bergen County authorities became aware of the fight, the Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office Confidential Investigation Unit opened an investigation into the officers. Investigators reportedly determined that one of the Belleville cops, a 32-year-old man, provided police with false information during questioning outside the bar.
The other suspects include a 24-year-old man, a 28-year-old man, and a 39-year-old man. All four Belleville police officers have been charged with simple assault. Additionally, the suspect accused of providing false information to law enforcement has been charged with hindering apprehension.
The suspects will have to appear at Bergen County Central Processing on December 14. While the criminal charges remain pending, the suspects have been suspended from their jobs with the Belleville Police Department.
