Bayonne NJ Woman Accused of Making Up Story About Rape and Kidnapping
The defense attorney for a man accused of kidnapping and raping a Bayonne NJ woman is arguing in court that the victim concocted the whole story.
The defendant, a 45-year-old from Jersey City, faces charges for aggravated sexual assault, kidnapping, criminal restraint, aggravated assault, and weapons offenses.
The charges stem from an incident in August 2013. The defendant met the victim at Hudson County Plaza in Jersey City, New Jersey. The defendant assisted the woman in the parking lot when she needed to get her keys out of a locked vehicle.
At some point during their initial encounter, the defendant told the victim that he was a supervisor in Hudson County. He also offered to help the woman get a job with the county.
The following day, the woman brought her resume to the defendant. According to the victim, the defendant flirted with her and asked her out on a date; she made up an excuse not to go.
A few days later, the defendant contacted the victim again. He asked her to meet him at Hudson Lanes, near the Bayonne/Jersey City border, so that the two of them could discuss the job opportunity.
The two parties met at the bowling alley. The defendant later took the victim to his home on Stevens Avenue in Jersey City.
The defendant then allegedly lured the victim into his residence. Once inside the house, the defendant allegedly pulled out a knife and threatened the victim.
According to prosecutors, the defendant spent the next several hours raping the victim.
The victim eventually got hold of the knife and stabbed the defendant in the neck. A struggle ensued, during which they both tumbled down a flight of stairs. The victim stabbed the defendant multiple times and then ran upstairs; a resident in another apartment dialed 911 and called for help.
The defendant’s version of events is substantially different. The defendant has argued at trial that the sex with the victim was consensual.
When the victim took the witness stand during trial, things got heated. The defense attorney accused the victim of making up “this story about rape.” The victim responded forcefully that the defendant had, in fact, kidnapped and raped her.
